I Happened to Know a Man
By Garfield Francisco Dsouza

Who left home at 33.
He abandoned a woman
supposed to be his mother.
And he didn’t return to bury his father.
At least that’s what his close friends –
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John –
kept telling me.

He had no ambition
and told everyone he knew
that he had no ambition.
And worse!
He went about declaring
in a tone miles away from caring
that a career
was not much of an inspiration.

The poor poor mother
struggled on her own.
Not much is known
about how she managed.
But I do remember his close friends –
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John –
telling me that she met him again
when he needed to be bandaged.

And then – well, he died.

Now, I also remember a God
very much like this fellow.

Wonder why one
could not save the other.
