The male line
By Ali Al-Jamri

A father sits his son down

to teach his ancestry.

The father’s father’s father’s father’s father’s father’s father’s father’s father’s father’s father

is as far back

as the father can go.

The son learns it all.

Years later,

the son realises

he does not know his mother’s mother’s name.

He goes to ask his father.
